A major city in North Rhine-Westphalia may be on the brink of a digital revolution: at the end of September, the "Bündnis Deutschland" council group submitted a motion to Bochum city council to turn the city, which is primarily known for its mining and theater, into a "Bitcoin City". The aim of the motion is to establish BTC as an alternative means of payment for local companies and citizens and to position Bochum as an innovative business location.

The application envisages that the city administration, together with "Bochum Marketing" and "Sparkasse Bochum", will develop a concept to promote the gradual acceptance and use of Bitcoin. This should not only benefit companies, but also offer citizens new opportunities by enabling them to pay municipal payments such as fees and taxes with the leading cryptocurrency in the future. According to the applicants, Sparkasse Bochum will play a central role in this and teach people how to use Bitcoin securely.

Strengthening the local economy and benefits for citizens

The introduction of Bitcoin as a means of payment could significantly strengthen the local economy, according to the proposal by the "Bündnis Deutschland" parliamentary group. By accepting Bitcoin, companies would have the opportunity to distinguish themselves as pioneers of the digital economy and thus appeal to new, particularly international, customer groups. Bochum could also become more attractive as a location for start-ups and future-oriented companies.

The initiative also promises benefits for citizens. They will have more financial flexibility and will be able to use modern payment methods, which could appeal to tech-savvy and young people in particular. At the same time, the digitalization of municipal services could increase the efficiency of administration and facilitate access to municipal services.

Outlook

On October 10, 2024 from 2 p.m., the motion of the "Bündnis Deutschland" parliamentary group will be debated in the Bochum City Council. At this meeting, the council members will discuss and vote on the future of the "Bitcoin City" project. Who knows, maybe Germany will actually have its own "Bitcoin City" before El Salvador.

In summary, we call on the city of Bochum to actively promote the introduction of Bitcoin as a means of payment in order to position the city as an innovative and future-oriented location. Close cooperation with Bochum Marketing and Sparkasse Bochum is crucial in this regard.
Council group of the "Alliance Germany"

Interested citizens and representatives of the local economy can follow the meeting live on "Rats-TV" and form their own opinion of the arguments put forward by supporters and critics. The Council's decision could set the course for Bochum's digital future and is therefore eagerly awaited not only in the city, but certainly also beyond its borders.
