Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital recently renamed itself MARA and is looking to broaden its footprint for sustainability. Yesterday, the company announced that it now holds 26,200 (or 26.2k) BTC, alluding to the Marathon distance - 26.2 miles.

MARA's first Bitcoin marathon

At the end of July this year, MARA once again announced its "full HODL strategy" and recommended Bitcoin as a reserve asset - Blocktrainer.de reported. The listed company already owned 20,000 Bitcoin.

Michael Saylor, co-founder and head of MicroStrategy, asked MARA CEO Fred Thiel on the 𝕏 platform whether the company name "Marathon" should also include at least 26.2k BTC - an idea that Thiel was not averse to. Since then, the company has made further BTC purchases and had 25,945 Bitcoin on its balance sheet at the end of August. Now the 26,200 BTC mark has finally been reached, which Fred Thiel did not allow to be commented on in conversation with Michael Saylor:

Hey Michael, one marathon is done! Working on the next one :-)

Hey [Fred], congratulations on completing your first marathon.

Saylor has almost completed the ninth Bitcoin Marathon with his company, which holds more than 226,000 BTC. Further marathons are planned.

In addition to BTC purchases, MARA continues to mine Bitcoin itself as part of various projects and is striving to continuously improve its own hashrate. In August, MARA's hashrate rose to 35.2 exahash per second. The Bitcoin that is mined is likely to come primarily from blocks that were mined in the USA and therefore labeled "Made in USA" by MARA. According to the "full HODL strategy", these Bitcoin should remain on the balance sheet for at least a while, meaning that another Bitcoin marathon could soon be completed by MARA.
