The established hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor presented a new product at the start of BTCPrague - the Trezor Safe 5. The Czech company's latest hardware wallet comes with enhanced functionality and offers an improved user experience compared to its predecessor, the Trezor Safe 3.

Trezor Safe 5

The Trezor Safe 5 comes in the familiar design. It has a sturdy housing with a Gorilla Glass surface that is resistant to light impacts and scratches. This time it is available in four new colors: Black Graphite, Violet Ore, Green Beryl and Bitcoin Orange.

Users can connect and use the Trezor Safe 5 as usual via a USB-C interface with their smartphone or PC via the Trezor Suite. It is technically similar to its predecessor, with a secure element, pin and passphrase. However, the newer model now has a 1.54-inch touch display in color and with vibration as haptic feedback. Trezor has thus created a more user-friendly input option for the Safe 5.

In addition, the SLIP39 Shamir backup protocol gives users the option of splitting the existing seed into several pieces at a later date, which can then be distributed to different people (multi-share). Single-share is of course also possible with Trezor Safe 5.

The technical innovations have an impact on the price. While the predecessor model costs a reasonable 79 US dollars, Trezor's latest hardware wallet Safe 5 is available for a price of 169 US dollars. The Safe 5 is available for pre-order from today. Delivery will start in July.

Bitcoin-only series

The latest hardware wallet from Trezor supports thousands of cryptocurrencies. But Bitcoiners can also be pleased: as with the Safe 3, there will also be a Bitcoin-only version in which the firmware is reduced to the bare essentials, making the product even more secure.

Trezor Experts

The company is also launching the Trezor Experts onboarding service. With this service, customers can have experts help them set up their hardware wallet in a video call for 99 US dollars per hour. They also teach how to use Trezor products and answer customers' questions in a private and secure environment, seven days a week. This puts Trezor on a par with its competitors, such as BitBox and Blockstream, which already offer similar services.

Conclusion

With the Safe 5, Trezor has brought a worthy successor to the Safe 3 onto the market. The color touchscreen and the extended functions are appropriate upgrades that improve the user experience, but also have an impact on the price. At 169 US dollars, you have to pay more than double the price of the Trezor Safe 3. Now it remains to be seen whether the Trezor Safe 5 can hold its own on the market.
